STEMstruct: Inspiring the Next Generation of Builders, Designers & Innovators
Over the past number of weeks, Construction Futures has proudly partnered with Sentinus to deliver the pilot of our new flagship education programme - STEMstruct - aimed at introducing young minds to the world of construction, sustainability, and design, with 193 students taking part.
The pilot saw us work with Primary 7 pupils across seven local schools, each challenged to work together to design and build their own vision of the ‘House of the Future’.
Through this project, students learned about key roles in the construction and built environment industry, including the Architect, Engineer, Builder, and Sustainability Manager - gaining a better understanding of how these roles contribute to the building process.
From Classroom to Concept
Each school began their journey with an interactive workshop designed to spark curiosity and encourage teamwork. Pupils took part in hands-on activities exploring ideas around:
Building design and structure
Sustainable materials and environmental responsibility
Problem-solving and creative thinking
The excitement continued to build as we hosted a live video Q&A with professionals working across the construction sector. Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions, gain real-world insights, and deepen their understanding of how their model houses could reflect genuine practices in the industry.
A special thank you to our inspiring guest speakers:
Olivia Laughlin – Samuel Stevenson Architects
Dairmud Mullen – Heron Bros
Des Creelman – Mascott
Fionnuala McKenna – Construction Futures
Your time, insights, and encouragement helped bring the industry to life for a younger audience in a meaningful and memorable way.
The Grand Finale
The programme culminated at the Sentinus STEM Celebration Day at South Lake Leisure Centre, Craigavon, where pupils from each school proudly displayed their completed model houses to fellow students, teachers, and guests.
We were genuinely amazed by the creativity, thoughtfulness, and ingenuity on display. Every model was unique — from eco-homes made of sustainable materials to futuristic smart homes powered by renewable energy. Pupils had trialled materials, experimented with design, and carefully considered their approach, showing just how much they had taken on board throughout the programme.
This pilot has proven just how capable and imaginative our next generation truly is. If the STEMstruct showcase is anything to go by, the future of our construction and built environment sector is in safe and enthusiastic hands.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. STEMstruct has shown the power of engaging young learners early - equipping them with real-world context, practical experience, and the confidence to imagine a better, more sustainable future. We look forward to building on this momentum and expanding the programme in the months ahead.
